Life Protection Systems

Life Safety & Manual Fire Alarm Systems

Life safety systems are categorized to provide varying levels of fire protection. Category L1 systems offer the highest protection, with both manual call points and automatic fire detection throughout the premises, including roof spaces and voids. These systems aim to provide the earliest warning in case of fire, with exemptions for certain low-risk areas. Typically used in residential care and large office buildings, L1 systems are designed for comprehensive coverage. Category L2 systems build on the L3 system, offering additional protection in areas with a high risk of ignition, such as kitchens and plant rooms. They are suitable for medium-sized premises, providing sufficient time for evacuation before escape routes become impassable due to smoke and flames.

Category L3 and L4 systems focus on providing early fire warnings in escape routes and adjoining rooms, with L3 covering all escape route compartments, while L4 focuses on detection within escape routes like stairwells. L3 systems offer broader coverage than L4 and are suitable for buildings where quick evacuation is critical. Category L5 systems are tailored to meet specific safety needs, such as automatically closing metal shutters or triggering fire extinguishing systems in computer rooms. These systems are often implemented based on a fire risk assessment. Lastly, Category M systems are manual fire alarm systems, typically used in workplaces like workshops or factories. These systems rely on manual call points for fire detection and do not include automatic detection, making them suitable for environments where the occupants are expected to notice the fire and activate the alarm.

Property Protection Systems

Category P systems aim to provide the earliest possible fire detection, minimising the time between ignition and the arrival of the fire services. The goal is to reduce property damage.

These types of systems are purely for the protection of property and fall into two classifications, Category P1 and Category P2.

Category P1 is designed to protect the whole building, Category P2 is installed in defined parts of the building only, which may have a high risk or hazard.
